Languages, Reach and Impact
The 11 languages implemented on this Web
site - we refer to these as our firm's core
languages - provide Laguna Research Partners
with exposure to a total native speaker (L1)
population of 2.478 billion. Mandarin,
the world's leading L1 language, is spoken
natively by an estimated 865 million.
English is the world's second most common L1
language with a native-speaker population of
approximately 355 million.
The following chart presents L1 data for LRP's
11 core languages. These figures are
estimates for year-end 2008 and are
expressed in millions. |

As shown in
the next chart, an estimated 1.2 billion
speak English as a second language, the
largest second-language (L2) population in
the world. Mandarin is next with an L2
population of roughly 480 million. (Aggregate and percent-of-total
data for multiple L2 speaker populations are
not necessarily valid given that some
second-language speakers speak more than one
second language.)
The chart
below presents L2 data for LRP's 11 core
languages. All figures
are year-end 2008 estimates and are
expressed in millions. |

The figures in
the L1 and L2 charts above are Laguna
Research Partners estimates, and are based
on leading commercial and government data
and information sources from around the
globe.
Using a
narrower focus, LRP's 11 core languages
provide our firm with a direct connection to
more than 1.371 billion Internet users
worldwide. This represents 79% of all
1.734 billion Internet users as measured on 30 September 2009.
Notably, nine of LRP's core languages -
these nine are identified in bold print
below - rank among the ten most heavily used
Internet languages in the world.
The chart
below presents Internet user-language data
for all languages. These figures apply to
30 September 2009 and are expressed in millions. |

1 Simplified Chinese
characters are associated primarily with
spoken Mandarin in the People's Republic of China
(except Hong Kong and Macau), Malaysia and Singapore. |
|
2 Traditional Chinese characters are
associated primarily with spoken Cantonese
in Hong Kong and Macau, spoken Mandarin in
Taiwan, and spoken Cantonese and Mandarin in
overseas Chinese communities. |
|
3 The government of the People's
Republic of China has introduced simplified Chinese
characters in an effort to boost the PRC's
literacy rate. Nearly all simplified
characters were
introduced prior to the handovers of Hong
Kong and Macau. |
